    carlos,

well written piece. i’m replying because i currently hold palm stock, and truly believe it will be the comeback story of the telecom industry: rocky to i-phone’s apollo.

yes, the internet, facebook, twitter are buzzing with excitment over the new phone. that buzz has reached fever pitch and is about get white hot. here’s why:

    1) only investors and tech geeks know about the phone right now. it’s about to go mainstream with an announement. then in a month, everyone will know.
    2) palm’s trojan horse is that the phone debuts it’s new operating system: “webOS”. this is what sets it apart from other contenders who are just trying to copy apple.

this is something new, a game changer, a revenue stream for other palm products….and the street doesn’t even know about that yet.

success to the both of us. take care, friend.

What if the game is no longer about a phone, but a personal, highly mobile and usable platform? There may be a message in that Apple have a gadget that is like the iPhone in all respects but voice telephony!

Spot-on piece…but here’s my concern. I know a lot of people that used to work for 3Com (when they still owned Palm) and watched as the brand almost got run into the ground, not to mention the original creators splitting off to create Handspring (Now owned by Palm). This brand has been through so many changes, and their product has always been ok…but just ok. What they really need to is to hit the ground running with the Pre and convince people it really does out perform the iPhone. People called the Android phones iPhone killers, too. I think the success of this phone depends more on management than on the actual products in a lot of ways. The phone will perform. The company might not.

Caitlin is right—I’ve always equated Palm products with being “OK, but nothing special.” And definitely not for me. But with this new OS and all the hype it’s getting, they might be onto something.

The proof will be in the Pre pudding.

To my mind, Apple just has the magic. Anything else is destined to feel a little off — kind of like the Zune vs. the iPod.
